Thien Pham is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science alongside a Diploma of Music at the Melbourne University Conservatorium, studying under Owen Morris. His mentors include Rosie Turner, Eugene Ball, and Sarah Henderson. Thien has had the opportunity to perform with acclaimed musicians such as Andrea Keller, Sam Anning, Mat Jodrell, James Morrison, Scott Tinkler, Michelle Nicolle, and Dick Oatts.
Thien has received numerous accolades including the Generations in Jazz James Morrison Scholarship, Monash University Emerging Jazz Performer Prize, and Outstanding Improviser at the Victorian All-State Jazz Championship. He was selected for the Australian Art Orchestra mentorship program and featured as a 'Young Artist' in the inaugural Dingo Australian Jazz Journal (2021). In 2024, he toured China with renowned New York Broadway singers.
As an active figure in the Australian jazz scene, Thien is regularly engaged as a sideman across various bands and genres. He maintains a regular collaboration with Amos Roach and has performed with the Aussie Pops Orchestra and at the Australian Open opening ceremony at Rod Laver Arena. His recording credits include work with leading Australian musicians for Oscar Bruten's The Strzelecki Suite and Minnie Hill's There is Light (ABC Jazz). He is also a sought-after big band musician, performing with ensembles including: JazzLab Orchestra, James Morrison Big Band, Jack Earle Big Band, Paris Cat Big Band, B# Big Band, Australian National Jazz Youth Big Band with Remy Le Boeuf (2024), Rising Sun Big Band, Southbank Jazz Orchestra, and Will Jones Big Band.
Beyond jazz, Thien has performed in professional pit orchestras for productions like Sister Act and regularly plays in corporate and wedding bands. His versatility extends to various genres, including work with La Influencia, and as a founding member of Mario Kart Live Band. He has collaborated with diverse artists and groups including Jaron Jay, Owelu Dreamhouse, Delsinki, Silent of Sound, Jacob Fitzgerald, Isaiah Firebrace, and Melbourne Trap Orchestra.
In the classical realm, Thien has earned first prize in both the Fine Music Online Championships (Junior Bb Trumpet, 2020) and the Victorian State Solo Ensemble Championships (Junior Concerto, 2020). His classical performance experience includes the New Zealand National Brass Band Competition (2019), serving as principal trumpet with the Melbourne Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, performing with Melbourne Youth Orchestra at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, participating in the Australian Youth Orchestra, and collaborating with the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and Melbourne Opera.
Thien continues to perform, tour, and record regularly across Australia and internationally as a versatile trumpet player in classical, jazz, and commercial settings.
