Thien Pham is currently studying a Bachelor of Science alongside a concurrent Diploma of Music at the Melbourne University Conservatorium, under the guidance of Owen Morris. He has previously been taught by Rosie Turner, Eugene Ball, and Sarah Henderson. Thien has had the chance to play with musicians like Andrea Keller, Sam Anning, Isaiah Firebrace, James Morrison, Scott Tinkler, Michelle Nicolle, and Dick Oatts.
His achievements include the Generations in Jazz James Morrison Scholarship, the Monash University Emerging Jazz Performer Prize, the Outstanding Improviser Award at the Victorian All-State Jazz Championship, and participation in the Australian Art Orchestra mentorship program. In 2021, Thien was featured as a 'Young Artist' in the inaugural Dingo Australian Jazz Journal. In 2024, he had the honor of touring China with esteemed New York Broadway singers.
In the classical music field, Thien has received first prize in the Fine Music Online Championships (Junior Bb Trumpet 2020) and first prize in the Victorian State Solo Ensemble Championships (Junior Concerto 2020). He has performed in the New Zealand National Brass Band Competition (2019), played as principal trumpet with both the Melbourne Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Youth Orchestra at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, participated in the Australian Youth Orchestra, and performed with the Australian National Academy of Music.
In jazz and contemporary settings, Thien has performed with the James Morrison Big Band at Hamer Hall, worked with Amos Roach, played with the Aussie Pops Orchestra, and appeared at Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open opening ceremony. He has also recorded with leading Australian musicians for Minnie Hill's 'There is Light' (ABC Jazz) and performed at Federation Square for the Melbourne Cup 2022.
Thien continues to perform, tour, and record regularly across Australia and internationally as a classical, jazz, and commercial trumpet player.
